What is entrepreneurial spin-off and what are its objectives?
What are the benefits of spin-offs and how is it different from entrepreneurship?
What is the interest for large companies to promote spin-off? What interest for employees?
In bees, swarming is a phenomenon that consists of letting a portion of the hive escape to form another colony elsewhere.
Nature being an inexhaustible source of inspiration, the same idea has sprung up within companies. Today, there are only bees that try: employees too!
But what are we talking about when we talk about entrepreneurial spin-offs?
Entrepreneurial spin-off: Definition
On the model of bees, spin-offs consist of the creation of a company by an employee who leaves his employer. The latter will help his former employee in his approach. Because it is good for companies to support their employees with the objective of creating or taking over a business.
It should be noted that the practice of spin-offs is different from entrepreneurship (see our article Entrepreneurship: definition and examples of this form of entrepreneurship), in the sense that employees involved in a spin-off strategy leave their job business. It is not a question for them to implement their entrepreneurial talents within their company, but to take flight to new horizons. It is independently of their employer that they lead their entrepreneurial project, leaving the salaried workforce.
Entrepreneurial spin-off: why? what interest ?
The benefits of spin-offs are numerous, both for the company that supports start-ups, and for the employee who benefits from this opportunity. The entrepreneurial spin-off strategy is built on a win-win relationship.
Among others, the company that promotes spin-offs:
adjusts its salaried workforce by detecting voluntary departures. Indeed, in the majority of cases, spin-offs are the result of the will of employees, who express their own willingness to leave the company to create or take over a business,
values the initiative and thus has a motivation tool for its employees,
offers itself the possibility to outsource in a fast and confident way peripheral activities. In fact, an employee who gave full satisfaction to the company and who then exercises his function as an independent can become a business partner with proven skills, with whom the link is already established,
promotes the mobility of its employees within its structure since positions are released,
can quickly expand its commercial network with new trusted players.
For its part, the employee who benefits from a spin-off strategy benefits from:
help from his “spin-off company” in setting up and implementing his project. This help can take different forms: methodological, financial, technical, logistic, commercial, etc.
support and accompaniment of a familiar and experienced structure. The employee does not leave his employer to start alone. He is surrounded in his approach,
of a first commercial partner since “the spinning company” will be able to entrust certain ancillary activities to the new entity born from the spin-off.
Benefiting from a spin-off policy allows employees to leave the salaried mode in the best possible conditions to embark on the adventure of entrepreneurship.2
